Born the eldest of 10 children, Dr. Dorsett had to assume many roles to assist his parents in the rearing of his younger siblings. The modest income of both working parents presented challenges which would ordinarily derail many others in the same situation presented with such pressures. However, the commitment to family, steeped in tradition, was a driving force behind Dr. Dorsett’s overall achievements – from walking to school every day, staying after for extracurricular activities, then coming home and making sure his siblings did homework and chores to the satisfaction of his mother (deceased), before she came home from her job as a domestic worker. His father (former West Park Commissioner Thomas Dorsett) worked tirelessly on construction jobs to keep a roof overhead and spent the evenings conversing with his children and reminding them of the struggles and opportunities of life.

Dr. Dorsett graduated from Miramar High School and went on to attend Florida A & M University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Married to his wife Kathy for the past 37 years, Dr. Dorsett worked as a P.E. teacher in inner city schools for 13 years, embracing his position as a role model for at-risk students. He furthered his education at Nova Southeastern University earning a degree in Education Leadership and later a doctorate degree in
Child and Youth Studies, with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. His dissertation focused on student attendance and academic achievement as he saw the correlation between at-risk students not attending school and the lack of a support system which led to low academic performance, leading to making poor economicchoices.

Realizing that the future of any community depends on the successes of each generation, one of his goals is to adequately prepare teachers to be more productive in reaching our students. Leading by example, Dr. Dorsett has aligned himself with various organizations with the goal of mentoring and providing guidance and leadership to future generations. Some of these organizations include:

  • Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA)
  • Broward Principals and Assistant Association (BPAA)
  • Broward Alliance of Caribbean Educators (BACE)
  • National Associations of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
  • 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project
